After 12 years in the newspaper business, I've just accepted a position as assistant professor in the School of Journalism at Middle Tennessee State University in Murfreesboro, just outside of Nashville. Previously, I had worked as a graphics journalist at three West Coast major metro dailies: four years at The Seattle Times, five years at the San Jose Mercury News and, most recently, two and a half years at the Orange County Register in Southern California. I earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Buffalo State College in New York, and a Master of Fine Arts degree from the University of Wisconsin at Madison. Before newspaper work, I had taught art and design classes at several universities, first as a teaching assistant at Madison, and then as an instructor at Pierce College and at the University of Puget Sound, both in Tacoma, Washington. In addition to my news and editorial work, I have created artwork in traditional media, primarily oil paintings and relief prints, for display in art shows and for sale to collectors. I have had work in six solo shows, twenty-one juried group shows, and ten invitational shows, through which I won six awards. |
